Education

Montgomery County Public Schools is the largest school district in Maryland serving over 160,000 students. The student population represents a diverse group of individuals that require our supporting services staff, teachers, and school administrators to be equally diverse and culturally proficient. Darwin firmly believes that education is an important lead indicator of the relevancy and strength of our future workforce and economic health.

That is why he will work with State and Federal representatives to obtain the most funding possible for our students. Darwin will partner with parents, nonprofits, and community stakeholders to make early childhood education a reality and collaborate with MCPS on closing the opportunity and achievement gap that is persistent among our minority students.

Additionally, Darwin supports programs and initiatives that offer career pathways to our youth and will work in close collaboration with the Board of Education and Superintendent to make sure that our students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the future.

Economic Growth

With over 1 million residents, a median income that is almost twice the National and a diverse and educated workforce, Darwin knows Montgomery County is a great place to do business. But to have a robust and healthy economy, we must have the right mix of investment, human capital, and infrastructure.

That is why Darwin will continue to market and brand Montgomery County as the hub where businesses start, grow, and thrive. He will continue to reduce government red tape, streamline the startup and procurement process, and provide access to capital and business resources. He will showcase the accomplishments of our business community and assist those that may be struggling.

Darwin will continue to invest in our most valuable asset — our people. In collaboration with WorkSource Montgomery, he will provide the framework to support our residents who are unemployed or looking to transition into other careers by connecting them with prospective employers, offering workshops to improve their resume and interviewing skills, providing professional development opportunities and training in the job hunting process.

Lastly, he will continue to invest in our aging infrastructure and continue to make technological enhancements to improve the overall quality of life that makes our County a desirable place for companies to relocate.

Transportation

Understanding that a first-rate, multimodal transportation system is critical to the economic growth of our County, Darwin plans to assess the current and projected traffic demands of our roads and devise a plan with the department of transportation to make the necessary updates. He will also identify bottleneck areas and accident-prone intersections and propose common-sense solutions to alleviate traffic flow.

Darwin will continue to support the construction of the Purple Line and other initiatives that decrease gridlock, carbon footprint, and delays. And as our neighborhoods are developed, he will make sure that those who aim to profit from this growth also contribute their fair share to improving our transportation system and providing ample public spaces such as parks, schools, and recreational centers, that enhance the quality of life for our residents.

Furthermore, he will review the timeline of approved construction projects and strive to reduce their impact on our neighborhoods, businesses, and residents by proposing alternate routes and other means of transportation.

Other proposed solutions to lessen traffic congestion include:

  • Continue to update our technological capabilities
  • Increase mass transit options
  • Manage development density
  • Encourage telecommuting
  • Require employers to hire Montgomery County residents first
